En 1982 Lancia entró con el 037 en el mundo de los rallyes dispuesto a consolidar el dominio que ya ejercía por entonces con el Stratos. En 1983 ganó el Campeonato del Mundo de Rallyes de constructores, demostrando una competitividad excepcional frente a sus rivales. Fue el último coche campeón de Lancia con tracción trasera.
Motor DOHC supercargado de 2140 cc y 16 válvulas montado en posición central. 200cv a 8000 rpm. Las unidades de competición alcanzaban los 325cv.
